Next to the brewhouse, bottle washing is the largest consumer of energy and water at the Brauerei Aying Franz Inselkammer KG brewery. The previous bottle washing machine was consuming too much fresh water and had to be replaced. IGS GbR’s planning office has developed a method for particularly energy-efficient bottle cleaning and put it into practice for the first time at the Aying brewery.
As part of the method, a high-temperature heat pump is used to cool the water in the bottle washing machine’s post-treatment zones including the bottles that pass through. The waste heat is transferred in cascade to a circuit via several heat exchangers. It is then heated to an even higher temperature via the high-temperature heat pump, further heated via an existing combined heat and power (CHP) unit and is then available as a heating medium for the bottle washing machine’s caustic bath. The power required for the high-temperature heat pump is generated by its own CHP unit. The additional electricity generated in-house covers the company’s other demands for electricity.
Significant energy savings of over 1 GWh/yr were achieved by this bottle cleaning process, which equates to a reduction of 87 per cent. The reduction in drinking water consumption (for cooling) is of a similar magnitude.
Transferability
This method can be used in other breweries, as well as in dairy factories and businesses that produce mineral water. Economically, it is more worthwhile in larger companies that operate with two or three shifts. This innovative technology is not only suitable for new systems but can also be used as a retrofit for existing bottle washers.
